Hi Al,

I have worked with both WS2003 and W2008 (Vista Server).

A new customer asked me for a quote to install a ws2013
to run file sharing and as a Quickbooks Enterprise
database server. And, he want the ability to do a
Domain controller eventually. He also wants to
keep it simple. No extra, unused feature.

He has five workstations that I counted (I did not
get the full tour). They are a mixture of Windows
Frankenstein (w8), W7, and XP. He will probably
expand to 10 workstation by the end of the
the year. (Since I can still provide custom
computers with w7, he probably will go that route.)

His network will be 1000 base-T (Gigabyte) when
we are done with the new wiring he wants. Is
there any good way to make ws2013 take advantage
of the faster Ethernet? I have been using Intel's
Gigabyte cards.

Under the other servers I used, these was a small
business edition that came with a lot of extra crap
I did not want. So I used the basic version that
I could install what I needed. Does this basic
version still exist?

I support another new customer with ws2013 that
just moved into the area (meaning not my equipment or
installation). He complains that it is SLOW.

That was also the complaint on Vista Server, (and it
crashing a lot.

Is the SLOWS just now part o Windows server and
you really can't do anything about it? Just hold
your nose?

Under the Linux servers I have done (Red Hat
clones), extra memory is used to cache up
files from the hard drive. Make for faster
file sharing the "second" time a file is
requested. Is there a way to do this in
ws2013? Or, is extra memory just wasted?

Do you guys have a favorite RAID controller?
I have had good luck with 3Ware's 600 SAS
controllers. Any recommendations?

All tips will be greatly appreciated!

Typo. "2003 advice" should have been "2013 advice".
Into everyone's life a little humility must fall ...
