I have a problem with VSS on a server which was upgraded from 2k to 2k3.

When I go to a volume and click the Shadow Copies tab the tap has the
following error info

Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies
Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while
trying to process the specified operation.

The App log has the following
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: calling a routine on the Shadow Copy
Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details
IVssSnapshotProvider::QueryVolumesSupportedForSnapshots(ProviderId,29,...)
[hr = 0x8000ffff].

Anyone have an idea what I can do to correct this issue?

Thanks for the reply. I've already read these articles and tried to apply
the patch. Problem is the server has already been updated to SP2 so those
patches won't run.

Any other ideas?

Yes.

I'm currently reinstalling SP2 and then I'll rerun the roll-up.

There's a BUNCH of post-VSS roll-up patches I can suggest if the
regular roll-up doesn't help. Let me know.

Ok. The following are post-VSS roll-up hotfixes you may want to try.
Some general KBs as well.

Post-VSS roll-up hotfixes
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951568
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949391

KB Articles:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945058

3. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940032

5. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184
6. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953617
7. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950141

Anything in the event viewer such as Event ID's? That would help as
well.

I'll look at the articles...

I get event id: 12293

with the following data
Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies
Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while
trying to process the specified operation.

Thanks for the Event ID info. Can you also tell me the source as shown
in the event viewer?

Additionally, take a peek at what some folks say about this event id
here:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=12293&eventno=5462&source=VSS&phase=1

Aslo, double check your services, make sure Volume Shadow Copy is set
to Automatic and running, and make sure Microsoft Shadow Copy Software
Provider is not set to Manual but to Automatic and that it is running.

One other thing to try is to try and re-register the following:

cd %systemroot%\system32

net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Reboot and see if it persists. Do you have an iSCSI adapter by chance?

Ok looked over all the article and installed all the rollups that I could
and still have the problem. However, when doing the suggested commands here
I receveid a new error in the log associated to this line.

Vssvc /Register

The error is
Source: VSS
ID: 1

Discription:
Volume Shadow Copy Service initialization error: the control dispatcher
cannot be started [0x80070427].

In one of my other posts, I asked if you checked in the Admini Tools >
Services to ensure that both VSS services were set to automatic and
running. Is this correct? From what I am gathering, all people who are
throwing a 0x80070427 error either have not had the service start or
it fails to start. What backup util are you using. When you
re-installed Server 2003, was this from original RTM media or have you
made yourself a slipstreamed SP2 install CD?

Services are set to Auto and start up fine. Interestingly enough when
running the commands that cause the error I above it sets Microsoft Software
Shadow Copy Provider back to Manual. None the less both are running.

I was running Backup Exec 11 Remote agent on the server but I've since
uninstalled it. In the mean time I've been working with Data Protection
Server so its agent is installed on the server

The install was created via ISO from my Certified Pro package.
