Discussion:
Unable to install SNMP - Add/Remove Windows Components won't accept my install files

Server OS: Windows Server 2003, 2003 R2 (various service packs,
Standard/Enterprise, and x86/x64)

My employer recently purchased WhatsUp Gold for server and network
monitoring and I am working on implementing it. I am having a lot of
trouble getting SNMP installed on my 2003 (and 2003 R2) servers that
don't have it installed already.

I inherited a mostly Windows 2003 R2 network, but there is a bit of
everything from Windows 2000 Server SP4 to Windows Server 2008
Enterprise SP2 x64. Most of my 2003 boxes are 2003 R2 Standard SP2
x86, but there is some x64, Enterprise, and SP1. Also some original
Windows Server 2003 with either SP1 or SP2.

On all of these servers, when I try to add "Simple Network Management
Protocol" and "WMI SNMP Provider", invariably I get asked to insert
some media. I've seen three variations on the media it asks for,
depending on what server I am trying to install these SNMP components
on:

"Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition CD-ROM"
"Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition CD-ROM"
"Service Pack 1 CD-ROM"

Most of these servers are in remote locations, so I do not have access
to the CD-ROM drive. Instead, I have extracted the following to a
share on one of my file servers:

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard with SP2 x86 (Disc 1)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2 x86 (Disc 1)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard with SP2 x64 (Disc 1)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2 x64 (Disc 1)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard RTM/SP1 x86 (Disc 1)
Windows Server 2003 Standard RTM x86
Installation files (extracted) for Windows Server 2003 SP1 x86
Installation files (extracted) for Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86

On the servers I am trying to install SNMP on, I map a drive to the
share containing these installation files. No matter what i386 folder
I select, I receive an error such as the following:

"Setup cannot copy the file hostmib.dl_.

Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and
insert 'Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition CD-ROM' in the drive you
specify."

I did get it to work on one server, but for all the others I am
getting the above error and I cannot figure out for the life of me
what I am missing. I even have one server running Windows Server 2003
R2 Standard SP2 x86 and it asks for the "Service Pack 1 CD-ROM" disc
and won't accept my extracted 2003 SP1 files or 2003 R2 Standard RTM/
SP1 files.

What do I need to do in order to get this to work? I have spent a day
on this and have made very little headway.

Nevermind. I got one server I was having trouble with to take the
install by copying the disc's files to the server locally and pointing
the Add/Remove Windows Components Wizard there instead of the mapped
drive for the network share.

I am not sure why the mapped drive wasn't working, but I suspect it is
due to permissions. We are in the middle of a domain migration, and
most of these servers are still members of the old domain. The file
server I had mapped is in the new domain. Still, I had mapped the
drive using an account that had Modify permissions on the share and
all the files under it. Then again, the file server is a Mac server
and we've had our fair share of weird SMB issues related to it.
